Talking To Toddlers - Dealing With Child Behavior

Parenting is a very challenging and at the same time fulfilling undertaking. In dealing with child behavior a parent needs a lot of love, patience and understanding. Sometimes, the phrase 'disciplining a child' is being mistaken to scolding them or spanking a kid to correct their mistakes or misbehavior, which is so wrong. The way you communicate with your children and your own behavior when you are with them plays a vital role on how your kids behave. In their eyes, you are their role model.

It is not wise to render physical punishment to toddlers for their misbehavior; at this stage they don't have the ability to make a connection between their behavior and physical punishment. That being said, it is important not to spank, hit, or slap a kid at any age, they will only feel the pain of the hit without really understanding the reason for the punishment.

An effective alternative in dealing with child behavior is by having timeouts. Choose a place wherein there is less distraction, they should be told why the behavior is unacceptable. Give them a minute or two to calm down. Longer timeouts will not be effective for toddlers. As your kid grows and starts to comprehend the connection between actions and consequences, it is important for parents to start communicating your house rules.

Consistency is another essential factor in effective discipline, both parents should agree on what the rules are and then implement them. It is a bad precedent to pay no attention to occasional misbehavior or not follow through some threatened punishment.

In dealing with child behavior, a good parent should also recognize their kid's good behavior as well. Always remember to reward your child when they did something positive, discipline is not just about punishment but also acknowledging and encouraging your child's attempts in doing something good.
